Multi-Tasking me thinks . . .
Finally, after four days, I’ve managed to plant some pansies I’d bought from one of my favourite garden centres in Opio. I can’t even blame all the rain we’ve had on the Cote d’Azur for not sorting these little darlings out sooner.
Their heads had flopped and tiny, bushy white roots were poking through the bottom of their black plastic containers. Not good. The same goes for washing. I’m normally really good at pulling out the washing and stuffing it into our dryer as soon as the wash cycle is over, but there are times when I get side-tracked and need to reset the dial and start the wash all over again. Normally I find myself doing this twice but this time I broke my all time record: I’ve now washed the same clothes four times.
It’s not as if I don’t plan my day. I do. In fact, I have a long To Do List that I faithfully write up every day, crossing off items as I progress. I have even taken to using the electronic calendar on Happy Lappy to remind me of important meetings, phone calls and events. I am, generally, a very organised person, most of the time. So I was interested in reading the lead cover story in the NewScientist a couple of days ago about Procrastination (No. 2634 dated 15th December 2007) and how to resist this thief of time. However, my eye was caught by another lead article: Focus, focus, focus which seemed much more me.
Settling down to a good read I discovered my coffee was cold so went to heat it up in the micro-wave. With my cup twirling round for a quick 30 second blast, I took the furries for a rapid walk around the garden before returning to my hot coffee. I got back to my article. After a couple of lines my mind started to remember all the little chores that I’d been meaning to do and images of laundry, vacuuming, plants, dish-washer, ironing (god forbid) and what we were going to eat for supper flitted through my brain. There was also the website to continue. I started feeling guilty taking time off to read and put the magazine to one side.
Back in the office and glued once more to my computer I again looked at my To Do List. I crossed off “continue working on website”. Mission Accomplished. But I sat there with a troubled look on my face. So much so that Nigel asked what was wrong. So I explained about the washing machine scenario and the number of times I’d already washed his socks. “Would a combined washer-dryer be the solution?” he asked. That sounded like a very good idea so said I would think about it as I walked around the garden, also wanting to think about writing a new blog (most of my inspiration comes when I’m away from the computer).
As I strolled around, throwing the odd rain-soaked tennis ball for Freddy, I multi-tasked thinking about my chores and Nigel’s idea. “I’m rather good at multi-tasking my thoughts” I decided as I returned to my desk totally focussed on what I was about to write. Do I procrastinate? Not really, I just get side-tracked with more enjoyable tasks that are fun to do. Naturally, I was so focussed on writing up my blog that I totally forgot to give Nigel my answer and he was too engrossed in his computer to find out what it was . . .
And the washing? Ahh, well, let’s put it this way: Nigel’s socks will never be the same again.

I suppose it’s something we don’t like to discuss as the Cote d’Azur evokes long, hot sun-kissed summer days, languid autumns and spectacular spring days with some of the bluest skies you’ll ever see - but we certainly can get our fair share of rain. And for the moment we are deluged. The little river Brague that flows normally silently alongside our garden is gurgling, nay, whooshing past. So far it has yet to flood the field opposite but if the heavy rains continue it probably will. I’ve attached a photo to show you how magnificent it can become; though once the rain subsides it’s back to being the gentle babbling brook that it is most days.
